Target audience

When we think about a target audience we really dont know what it is, well a target audience is a group of people that are being specifically targeted by a specific product that is going on or even a production. most of the time is is often an advertisment which uses audience targeting

The 'British Board of Film Classification' has certain age restrictions on certain films that we watch. The main reason why they have age restrictions is because of the structure of the film but also as well as what the different scenes contian, the languages the actors are using , and is there are sexual scences or not. This picture is the logo for the 'British Board of Film Classification' this logo is usually behind the age certificate. They have made the age certidicates because the are many different stages in films that we watch so this is why they have placed them restrictions there. The main reason why the restrictions where made was becuase not everyone not everyone is the same ages and many people cant handle the same things, for example if the age restructions where not there and a 6 year old was aloud to watch something like SAW or INSIDIOUS they would end up feeling and becomeing terrified. So this is the reason why we have the classifercations that we have so the people dont see the wrong flims that are not targeted at their age group.

There are five main age classifercations that we all know and they are:

  • U

  • PG

  • 12

  • 15

  • 18

U rating

This should be suitable for audiences that are aged four years and over. All 'U' films should be set within a positive moral framework and should offer reassuring counterbalances to any violencem threat or horror.

PG rating

This means general viewing but some scences may be unsuitable for the younger children.A ‘PG’ film should not disturb a child aged around the age of eight or older. However, parents are advised to consider whether the content may be upsetting for younger or more sensitive children.

15 rating

No-one younger than 15 may see a ‘15’ film in a cinema. No-one younger than 15 may rent or buy a ‘15’ rated video work.

18 rating

No-one younger than 18 may see an ‘18’ film in a cinema. No-one younger than 18 may rent or buy an ‘18’ rated video work.

  1. the age restrictions are important BUT a target audience is something entirely separate. An 18 DOES mean that anyone over the age of 18 can watch it but not all 18 films appeal to everyone over the age of 18. A 25 year old woman would not watch the same things as a 60 year old couple or man on his own. Define your target audience.
